Gordon Gartrell - Fashion

July 25, 2010 - Chor Bazaar
What do two gals do when they want the same guy?  Why, share of course!  That's the dilemma that Sonal and I had when we both wanted to write a piece about my friend Umang Shah's t-shirt business, Chor Bazaar.  It's a small company that designs indie t-shirts with ironic Indian subject matter.  I told Sonal about it and how Umang described one of his shirts to me.  It said "Beat that snake with a stick" in Hindi.  He tried to explain the humor to me, but  just didn't get it.  When I described it to Sonol, she caught it right away.  So I gave her the scoop.  Here is Sonal's story on her blog titled Culture Melange - Inspired fusion between the east and west, across art, design, enertainment and food.

July 25, 2010 - Central PA's Best Kept Secret
I am not going to divulge all of my fashion secrets.  Although with the amount of people who actually read my blog, I could put the president's nuclear launch codes up here and no one would be the wiser!  Fashion is an adventure and an experience finding the perfect pieces for yourself.  It's trial and error, pass or fail.  I will give you a hint of a great place if you are ever in Harrisburg or York, PA.

Where did I go to get a black blazer by Theory originally over $370 for only $60?
Where have I purchased a Miss Albright Philadelphia bag that's about $128 for only $9.99?

Like I said, I can't tell you everything, but here's a hint:

July 25, 2010 - Some Advice About a Trend
I have a bit of an edge to my style.  Thanks to growing up in Central Pennsylvania I know all about fresh produce, Yuengling Lager and Rock n' Roll.  Thanks to great stations like Hot 105.7 I actually have some knowledge of good rock.  Recently, rock style has once again crossed over into mainstream pop culture.  Studs, nail heads, and other metal embellishments have found their way onto boots, bags, shoes, t-shirts, and just about everything else that's big enough to handle four metal pins and a hammer.

Well, once you get to studded pink ballet flats, you know the trend has "jumped the shark."  So my advice to you is this:  The studded look is on its way out the door.  You can still wear the pieces you already have, but walk past them when you see them in the store.  Rockers and genreral baadasses can proceed as usual.

That's Enough Mary Kate, That's Enough.

July 10, 2010 - Thank You Erin for Introducing me to Chictopia

The thing I love most about a new outfit is modeling it for my girlfriends, my mother, or my sister.  Nowadays with friends and family spread to the four winds, catching up takes over most of the conversation.  It doesn't leave much time to raid the closet and discuss looks.

While reading my classmate Erin's blog, Worth My While, I came across a new website called Chictopia.

Chictopia is a site that helps people decide what looks good on them.  You sign up and provide your height, weight, eye, hair, and skin color.  You can search the styles other members upload according to what will look good on your frame.  It also gives you a chance to upload photos of your outfits, inspirations, editorials and other things that explain your personal style.

July 10, 2010 - A New Take on an Old Fashion Accessory

I love my father.  He is everything a gal can want in a daddy.  He's not too cool.  He's incredibly smart, and he doesn't know a lick about fashion for women.  Over the years he has given me a pink suede jacket complete with a tassled belt, purses, earrings and most often necklaces.  Of all the gifts my favorites are the necklaces - thin gold chains with a nice pendant.  I always keep them and wear them day and night for some time before taking them off to match my jewelry with another outfit.

Dad hit a home run with all of the kids this past Christmas.  He gave us all chains with some sort of cross as the pendant.  He said that "We all have our crosses to bear."  A nice way to show that he understood we were each going through our own special challenges.  As usual, I wore the necklace day and night until one day I decided to remove the cross from the chain and keep it on my bathroom sink.  In a weird way I wanted to see it first thing in the morning because it comforted me.

Then a strange thing started to happen.  After being outside in the hot sun, resulting in a glorious tan, a couple of my guy friends started commenting about my necklace.  Now it was a thin chain around a bare neck that caught the light every once in a while.  I thought it was a nice alternative to the chunky chains that are in fashion right now.  Since then, I've been experimenting with wearing multiple thin chains (thanks to dear old Dad).  Overall I think it's a great look for late summer.  What do you think?

July 7, 2010 - Introducing Swagger NYC

Love them or hate them, (and quite frankly, they could care less) the style mavens of NYC are a breed apart.  Spend any amount of time in Soho, DUMBO or even "gasp" Williamsburg and you'll see a bunch of stick thin twentysomethings, boulevardiers, fashionistas, bohos, and b-boys and girls constantly experiment with new looks and attitudes like Watson & Crick before they decided to give up and just take Rosalind Bertrand's idea.
Many have attempted to document this rare breed with a dedication that could rival that of National Geographic.  Style sites like The Satorialist capture the sleek and chic as they happen to be perfectly lit and artfully posed.  Just like you local tattoo parlor proved that you actually DO need another hole in your head, Swagger NYC demonstrates that there is always room for another NYC fashion blog

Swagger originally started in the streets of Paris and quickly became the place to go (and be) for trendsetters and music-lovers alike.  The concept recently re-launched in NYC and is young enough for early adopters to brag to their friends how they followed the blog waay back in the summer of 2010.

Swagger NYC is like your bff from junior high.  You get the sense that they are snapping pictures as fashion kids move between class and work or going to their local bar.  The Swagger megabrand is quickly building its own army with 21K+ fans on Facebook alone.

Another reason to like Swagger NYC is that it documents a wider range of ethnicities, and reflects the tossed salad that New York is known to be.  (No, I won't insert a snide comment here.  It's too easy!)
